MLB remembers Stoneman Douglas

Por Jack Leyva

A total of 17 people died and many other resulted wounded in a shooting that took place on February 14, at Stoneman Douglas High School, in South Florida. A 19-year-old boy, Nikolas Jacob Cruz, was the author of the attack that had the entire nation in a state of panic. Only days after this massacre, the MLB has decided to honor the memory of the deceased making all teams wear a baseball cap with the acronyms of Stoneman Douglas.

Since the beginning of the preseason games that take place among the 30 teams of the MLB in Florida and Arizona, the baseball organization determined the use of special baseball caps in which you can clearly see the letters S and D crossed as part of a design that was thought to pay homage to all the families that suffered terrible losses in the shooting. “it is a tragedy that has hit the Florida State and there is a strong feeling among all the teams that this thing should be made immediately”, said the commissioner Rob Manfred, who also said that the players will be able to sign autographs and donate money to the Broward Education Foundation, which will benefit the victims’ families.

Since the size of the shooting was known, the sports’ universe manifested his commotion. Baseball had in Anthony Rizzo, first baseman of the Chicago Cubs, an important spokesperson who talked in the mourning honoring the victims, celebrated in Pine Trails Park. “It’s the hardest thing that I have ever done in my life. You don’t know what to say. I’m very proud of how people in Parkland have united to overcome everything that happened. Even though there are things that you can never recover, they are going to get experiences out of this tragedy”, said one of the Cubs leaders. Since Friday you could see the first baseball caps in the first games of the spring training. For example, the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees used them and stayed in silence for one minute to honor the victims in the George M. Steinbrenner Field.

There are precedents of this kind of practice. In 2001 the New York Mets wore baseball caps with the acronyms NYPD and FDNY, the police and firemen departments that had a crucial involvement in rescuing the victims of 9-11. The Mets wore these baseball caps in the first game that they played after the attacks, exactly 6 days later against the Pittsburg Pirates. Afterwards, on September 21, again the Mets wore the same honorific baseball caps at the Shea Stadium versus the Atlanta Braves. This game was won by the Mets due to a spectacular home run hit by Mike Piazza.
