Taylor Swift keeps her statistics neat with another hit

Por Damian

Taylor Swift is now boasting a new record in music. The artist rejoices her sixth album to sell 2 million copies in the U.S., as Reputation grasped the mark in the week finishing March 15, according to Nielsen Music. The set sold another 5,000 copies in those seven days, bringing its cumulative sum to just over the 2 million threshold.

After a remarkable debut on Nov. 10, 2017 with over 1.216 million copies sold in its first week, now Reputation has become the only record released in the last couple years to sell 2 million copies in the United States of America. Prior to Swift´s successful CD, the most recently released album to sell that amount of copies was Adele’s 25, which arrived on Nov. 20, 2015. It hit the 2 million mark after just three days and bowed with 3.38 million sold in its first week. 25 has sold 9.45 million copies through March 15.

It is known that in all of 2017, only two albums sold more than a million copies: Reputation and Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide). That’s a stark difference to 10 years earlier, when 29 albums sold at least 1 million, with eight of those exceeding 2 million. The weakening amount of million-selling titles isn’t a shock to anyone if you consider that record sales have steadily declined each year Since 2001, with the exception of 2012. In fact, during last year 166.3 million total albums were sold, as compared to 500.5 million in 2007 and 790.1 million, a decade before that.

But this is not an issue that concerns Taylor Swift, as her statistics have been pretty solid throughout her career. All six of her studio albums have now sold at least 2 million copies. In retrospective, let´s state how much time took each album from the country/pop singer to reach the 2 million milestone. Her self-titled debut made it in 61 weeks, “Fearless” in seven, “Speak Now” in six, “Red” did it in five, for the chart-smasher “1989” took only three weeks, and the current Reputation got there after its 18th week of release.

The American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift was born in Pennsylvania on December 13, 1989 and is nowadays one of the leading contemporary recording artists, known for her narrative songs filled with personal stories, which have received widespread media coverage.
