United States launches attacks against Syria

Por Damian

President Donald Trump announced on Friday the military attack on Syria, in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the regime of Bashar al-Assad last Saturday in Duma. The "precision missile attacks" are coordinated with France and the United Kingdom as a response to the "chemical weapons capabilities" of the dictatorship in Syria.

"I ordered the US armed forces to launch precision attacks on targets associated with the chemical weapons capability of dictator Bashar al-Assad", Trump said in a televised speech. The military offensive combines airstrikes and missiles from ships in the Mediterranean, according to military sources quoted by CNN.

Several news agencies reported that heavy explosions illuminated the sky of Damascus, the Syrian capital, while Trump made the announcement. Likewise, Syrian television reported that the county´s air defenses have responded to "American aggression," according to the AP news agency.

"The evil and despicable attack left mothers, fathers and children writhing in pain", Trump said, noting that the United States is prepared to press Assad until it "stops the use of prohibited chemical weapons.”

"Those are crimes of a monster," he said. Four British warplanes fired missiles at a Syrian military compound near Homs, suspected of harboring substances to make chemical weapons, the British Ministry of Defense said.

The offensive was aimed at "scientific research centers, several military bases, headquarters of the Republican Guard and the Fourth Division in the capital and its surroundings", according to the NGO Human Rights Observatory Syria. There is still no information about possible victims.

The US leader blamed Russia and Iran for "supporting, equipping and financing the criminal regime" of Syria and accused the government of Vladimir Putin of "breaking its promises" to prevent the Assad regime from using chemical weapons.

"Russia must decide whether to continue on this dark road or join the civilized nations as a force of stability and peace", said the president.

James Mattis, US Secretary of Defense, said during a press conference that "there are no plans for more attacks against Syria" and that so far there are no "reports of losses" by the US or allies.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said there was no "alternative" to the use of force in Syria, confirming that the United Kingdom joined France and the United States in launching the attacks. "I have authorized the British armed forces to carry out coordinated and targeted bombings to degrade the regime's chemical weapons capabilities and prevent their use", she said in a statement.

As for his part, French President Emmanuel Macron said the joint military response is against Syria's "clandestine chemical arsenal" and because "we can´t tolerate the banality of the use of chemical weapons."
