10 dead and 10 injured in shooting at Texas school

Por Damian

According to El Nuevo herald, at least one gunman opened fire last Friday at a high school in the Houston area, killing 10 people and wounding 10 others. Texas Governor Greg Abbot reported the victims in the Santa Fe High School massacre and added that the alleged attacker had a shotgun and a .38 revolver, both from the suspect's father.

Two other suspects were detained and are believed to be students. An indeterminate number of explosive devices were found in the school and its surroundings. The authorities were disarming them and asked the population to report the presence of suspicious objects without delay.

The school district confirmed that there were several injuries, but said it would not give more details. Deputy Director Cris Richardson said there was a suspect in custody. "We hope that the worst has happened and I really can´t say more because it would be pure conjecture", Richardson told reporters.

Michael Farina, 17, said he was in another part of the school when the shots started and thought it was a drill. He held an open door for handicapped students in wheelchairs when a director came running, shouting at everyone to flee. A teacher shouted "this is real".

They drove the students to a place behind a car dealership on the other side of the street. Some, thinking they were not safe yet, fled even farther, Farina said.

Friday's attack was the deadliest in Texas since a man with an assault rifle killed about 20 people in a rural church late last year. It came three months after the February 14 attack in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 dead.

Aerial images showed many students in a meadow and three medical helicopters at the school in Santa Fe, a population of 13,000 inhabitants 48 kilometers southeast of Houston. School officials said that law enforcement officers installed security measures around the building and moved the students to another place to reunite them with their parents.

A student told KTRK television via telephone that an armed man entered his classroom during the first period and opened fire. He said he saw another student with a bloody leg when they left the classroom. "We thought at first that it was a fire drill, but the teacher said, 'run'", said the scholar.

The student said she could not see the person who was shooting because he was escaping with the others through a back door in the classroom. The authorities did not confirm that report immediately.

The US Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said it was sending its agents to the site. Vice President Mike Pence said he and President Donald Trump were aware. Pence said that students, family and all those affected should know that "we are with you. We pray for you and I know that the American people pray for you". Trump added in a tweet that the first reports "do not look good. God bless everyone".

Survivors of the shooting kill in Parkland, Florida, expressed outrage and anguish on social networks. "All my heart is with the students of Santa Fe High School. It is a feeling too well known that no one should live. I'm very sorry that this epidemic has reached them, Parkland is with you now and always, " Jaclyn Corin, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, said in a tweet.

Between eight and ten people were killed and several more wounded, due to a shooting that took place today at a Santa Fe high school in southeast Texas, near Houston, police said.
