Por Damian

More information about the tragic event that shook the world is circulating on the web. One of the two survivors of the flight that crashed a week ago in Havana, the Cuban Emiley Sanchez, 40 years old, died last Friday, which brings to 112 the number of victims of the incident, an official source said in Cuba.

Sanchez died at 1.45 in the evening (5.45 GMT) at the Calixto García hospital in Havana, where she was admitted from the day of the accident as a result of the "severe traumatic injuries and burns" suffered, indicates a statement from the Public Health Ministry disseminated in state media.

In the same hospital, 19-year-old Cuban woman Maylén Díaz remains in critical condition. She is now the only survivor of the flight DMJ-972 that crashed on May 18 shortly after taking off from Havana airport with 113 people on board, including five children. "His condition was extremely critical with an unfavorable prognosis, maintaining a progressive deterioration, which was not possible to revert due to the appearance of difficulties, despite the efforts of the multidisciplinary team in charge of her care during the six days of intensive treatment" stated the official note.

Sánchez, like more than half of those killed in the accident, was born in the eastern province of Holguín (about 700 kilometers east of Havana. According to medical reports released this week, the woman had burns in more than 40 percent of the body, most of them deep.

Three women initially survived the catastrophe, but one of them Grettel Landrove, 23 years old, also died last Monday due to severe neurological damage suffered in the calamity. The only survivor left, Maylén Díaz, has no burns but serious trauma due to the violent collision and her condition is extremely critical with a reserved prognosis.

Flight DMJ-972 crashed on May 18 in an area of crops one kilometer from Havana airport due to causes that are still being investigated. The wrecked device, which the Cuban airline operated on a rental basis, was a Boeing 737-200 built in 1979 and owned by the Mexican airline Global Air, to which Mexican authorities have temporarily suspended operations pending the outcome.

The deceased are 101 Cubans and eleven foreigners, including seven Mexicans (of whom six were members of the crew), two Argentines and two Saharawis, one of them also with Spanish nationality.
